Aiden vacated the flat for the afternoon while I got ready for our date. Cynthia, my stylist, and Nicky, who had done my hair and makeup since I left uni, had been told the specifics, though I wasn’t allowed in on the secret.

Nicky blew out my red hair into brilliant, bold curls and kept my makeup light. The main pop of colour came from the signature cherry red I preferred for my lips. Cynthia finished the look with a black dress that moulded itself to my body before flaring out at the hips. The front of my legs were left uncovered, but from behind, the dress hit the floor. The plunge at the front left a healthy amount of cleavage on display, leaving me curious about where we were going.

I pestered Aiden for three days, trying everything to get him to tell me what he planned, but he took joy in refusing my requests. The only thing I asked was if it was low-key. Aiden was a man who went headfirst into everything in life, but I liked to tread more cautiously. A public date was unfamiliar territory, and with Aiden’s reputation, it was bound to raise eyebrows. This time, if Dad came to me, I would make a comment, but this would set the ball rolling.

When the car pulled up to the building, I realised Aiden had sent a driver rather than pick me up himself. In the back seat, I tried to push away the nausea that threatened to rise. Proper dates hadn’t been a thing the first time around. We were young, studying for university and trying to keep it a secret from the world. Looking back, there were so many things I would have done differently, but this was our second chance. We could set a new precedent for this relationship.

The car pulled up to a familiar part of London, and the driver opened the door to reveal Aiden waiting outside with a bouquet in his hand. His suit was perfectly tailored, skimming over every muscle of his body, and I clenched my thighs, trying to steer my mind out of the gutter. Aiden extended a hand and helped me out of the car. The cool air calmed the sudden flush that consumed my body.

“These are for you,” he said, handing me the bouquet. It was an arrangement of white blooms that stood out against my dress and his dark attire. Aiden leaned down, pressing a kiss to my cheek before he whispered in my ear. “If I wasn’t trying to be a gentleman, I’d tell you to get back in the car and take us straight home.” His teeth grazed my earlobe, and I shuddered before Aiden straightened up. “Shall we?”

He offered me his arm, and I looped one through it, cradling the flowers in the other. For the first time, I looked at the building we were walking into.

“The Brass Pig?” I asked in disbelief.

The three-star Michelin restaurant was notorious for being booked out months in advance.
